Role Summary

The Creative Technology Director - Immersive acts as the lead Technical Director for all Sphere Studio productions reporting to the VP, Immersive Executive Producer. Candidate must have considerable experience in technical direction, developing technology stacks and coding or as a creative entertainment technical director, managing teams and multiple projects for this demanding role. They must have the ability to lead and work collaboratively within a matrix environment. They must perform advanced and diversified production management and technical direction duties from development, through prototyping, production, QA, deployment and support. Projects will include work in all areas of Sphere, off-site activations, and other special projects as required. Working with the Immersive production team, develops production plans and provides input to budgets for new and future productions with a forward thinking, innovative process. Must be adept at prioritizing in a high pressure ever changing multiple productions environment.

• Execute high-level development and technology needs for each project. Research, collect and distill information into a technology vision. R&D for existing and emerging technologies on special projects.

Specific Functions/Activities Summary

  • A leader capable of initiating and sustaining the build and installation process.
  • Responsible for consistent and highest level of experience quality of productions at all times.
  • Translates concept development into technical reality and sets development and production plan.
  • Primary responsibility for the technical operations of the Sphere, including hardware, software, lighting, audio, scenic and fabrication design, projections, content, technology installation coordination, and necessary maintenance.
  • Track activities on projects, prioritize competing needs, and communicate effectively to stakeholders and clients.
  • Serves as the organization's primary point of contact for any creative technology inquiries from external contacts (e.g. vendors, partners)
  • Collaborates across teams to gather requirements and create comprehensive project/production plans including timelines, budget, quality, change, risk and issues.
  • Anticipates roadblocks & obstacles and establish integration points and channels between teams. Ensures that senior management is aware of potential issues.
  • Maintains a detailed understanding of our vendor contracts and agreements for the purpose of engaging on performance management and recommending changes/updates as needed.
  • Build excellent relationships with corporate, operations & venue team, vendors, key consultants through positive, consistent communications.


  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience as a Lead Technical Director in themed creative entertainment, brand activation, interactive exhibition, and/or large scale live entertainment with hands on prior experience in any one of the following: Interaction Creative Coding Hardware and Software , Generative Design/Animation, Realtime Development, Light Design/Programming, Audio Engineering, Master Electrician, AV integration
  • Superior production management and deep current technical direction knowledge about design technical aspects and ability to manager production aspects across diverse teams.
  • Oversees hardware, software, design, staff supervision and training, and working with the VP Immersive Executive Producer managing budgets and operational or development/production scheduling.
  • Manage multiple projects and keep team members on track, on time and on budget.
  • Extensive knowledge of design and implementation of show control equipment, interactive sensors, rigging and the methodology of interconnection various digital and analog systems, including knowledge of all theatrical disciplines including media, lighting, sound, LED display, playback and projection.
  • Familiarity with Disguise,7thSense, TouchDesigner, Notch, Watchout, Max/MSP, Unreal Engine, Unity, OpenFrameworks, P5.js, Cinder, WebGL, Websockets, Node.js, imagemagick, ffmpeg as well as physical/sensor computing and AI/ML workflows.
  • Deep experience in reading design and construction drawings in order to vet and provide technical feedback.
  • Deep knowledge and ability to interface with all systems and designers including scenic, audio, lighting, video and projection. Incl.knowledge of production management process and production management tools/ techniques.
  • Strong ability to identify and correct safety hazards and be proactive about safety concerns within the installation setting.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that will occasionally require weekends, nights and holidays and must be willing to travel to other locations as needed.
  • Familiar and comfortable in dealing with all technical trade unions


Candidates who have completed 60 credits of college-level coursework (representing 2 years), or have shown similar self-development through certifications, trade school coursework, etc. are preferred.
