Role Summary

Working with oversight from the VP, Legal & Business Affairs, the primary function of the Director Legal & Business Affairs is to negotiate, draft and administer marketing partnerships, hospitality, event, and marketing-related agreements and promotions on behalf of the Marketing Partnerships, Premium Hospitality, Garden of Dreams, Marketing, Research and Data & Analytics, and PR groups.

Specific Functions/Activities Summary

  • Review deal memos (or other outline of proposed business arrangements) for completeness and potential legal issues.
  • Draft, review and negotiate various contracts for the Sales and Marketing group, including sponsorship agreements, marketing agreements, vendor services agreements, non-disclosure agreements, corporate hospitality licenses, and event agreements (e.g., hotel, catering and location agreements).
  • Research, manage, and track existing contractual obligations, including compliance with existing contractual obligations and evaluating exclusivity requirements.
  • Coordinate with various personnel throughout MSGE to help facilitate business initiatives, as well as liaising with other Departments (e.g., Finance and Facilities) and, as applicable, colleagues at MSG Sports, to ensure compliance with policies.
  • Work on sweepstakes, contests and giveaways, including rules, registrations, releases and review of creative materials.
  • Ensure that issues raised by proposed business arrangements (including any conflicts with existing arrangements) are identified and brought to the attention (with appropriate analysis) of the supervising attorney.
  • Assess and advise on league rules and clearance requirements, including the review of any right of publicity/implied endorsement issues and use of player images. Time permitting, assist in the drafting and negotiating of agreements associated with marketing.
  • Set up and maintain contract files; prepare contract status reports for extensive projects; general contract administration for MSGE Legal.
  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a lawyer or paralegal
  • Extensive contract drafting and negotiating experience
  • Advanced computer skills, both Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Sports and/or Entertainment experience preferred. 
  • Outstanding prioritization and organizational skills, including the ability to execute multiple, high-priority projects independently and on short timeframes.
  • Sound judgment, a curious mind, strong work ethic, keen attention to detail, and a creative, collaborative and business-oriented approach to problem solving.
  • Candidates who have completed 60 credits of college-level coursework (representing 2 years), or have shown similar self-development through certifications, trade school coursework, etc. are preferred.
